6th Grade Concert Tonight!

It's that time again! Tonight is the 6th grade concert featuring the orchestra, band, and chorus. All chorus members should be in the chorus room by 6:30pm wearing your black and white.

Mulan Jr. Callbacks

Congratulations to everyone who auditioned for Mulan Jr. Be sure to check the call back list outside my room (6) to see if you need to come back Monday afterschool. The call backs will go from 2:45-4:30 and please bring your scripts.

Everyone who auditioned will be in the show. We had 122 students over three days come and sing and read lines for us. Every student should be proud of themselves. You made it very difficult for the judges.

If you are on the call back list, that does not guarantee you a role. It means that the judges want to hear you sing or read again on Monday. Get your rest over the weekend and good luck!

Mulan Jr. Questions

I've had many students ask me questions about Mulan Jr. and many who have been waiting to ask. If you have a question, ask it in the comments section and I will do my best to answer as many as I can by the end of the weekend.

You will be learning the audition music during the next chorus rehearsal and you will also get the reading audition material. Don't be afraid to do your research and watch the movie or look it up on the Internet. Have a good weekend!

P.S. We already have 105 students signed up for auditions. Yikes!

We had a great time rehearsing Tuesday morning and we're still looking for more members. It's been a blast working with the girls before school. We've been working on an a cappella pop song and a piece by Jim Papoulis. I will post some links for the girls to listen too on YouTube shortly.

Xylophoning It In!

The past few days the 5th Grade General music classes have been using the xylophones to create accompaniments for the Canoe Song. Along with using the xylophones, we've been able to talk about what syncopation and an ostinato is. We're very lucky to have the xylophones at our disposal and here we're trying to put 3 parts together with a strong B section. Sorry the video is a little shaky...and oh yeah, it was crazy hair day. (You cannot view the videos in school, only at home.)

Drummin' Away

This week the 6th grade music class has been drumming and working on our small jam sessions. They seem to really enjoy hitting something during the school day! We've been able to add other percussion instruments to our rhythms and the students have improvised many interesting rhythms.

Welcome to the 1st post ever on Mr. Toyama's Blog! As I've stated before, this is my first year in the JD district and I'm very excited to be here. For the last 6 years I worked in Groton, NY teaching 6th-12th grade and I'm looking forward to working with 5th and 6th graders this year.
